honeymoon road trip: day 3...reworked...and then day 4...

well, i guess i better get on this series before we go on another trip...which, fingers crossed, may happen soon.

warning: extremely photo heavy and super long post ahead.

also, somehow i messed up a day already...on day 3 we spent the morning driving around looking for dried chilies (with no success) and then stopped by trader joe's (i could NOT get enough of trader joe's. seriously.  i can't wait until KC gets one.)  and i went in a grabbed us a nice hiking lunch.  we then drove up to bandlier national monument park, about an hour's drive from santa fe and spent the morning hiking.

we both really liked bandlier A LOT.  it was a pretty popular place.  we were there on a monday and couldn't find a place to park when we first got there!  so we drove up the road to one of the scenic overlooks and ate our lunch and found a place after that.

bandlier is a great park that preserves the way of the ancestral pueblo people.  they lived in multi story homes carved into the rock face of the canyon in which they lived and were accessed by large tall ladders.  bandlier is the last name of the anthropologist who studied the people and area before the monument was opened as a park.

note: i have no idea why it took me so long to realize that the date was wrong on all these pictures.  i finally realized it about halfway through the trip and turned it off.  *facepalm*

the large hole is where a family would have slept, the small hole right above that are where they would have ran wooden beams out to form a roof type structure.  almost like a porch.

this is a kiva, a ceremonial structure.  i loved that you could get in and climb around on pretty much everything in the park.  it was like a giant playground.  the kiva was accessed through the "roof" and was pretty small once we got down in there.

a quick look down the frijoles canyon.  it was gorgeous.  northern new mexico and arizona were definitely my favorite areas of both states.  i love the mountains.

this is the type of ladder that the pueblos would thatch together and use to climb pretty much everywhere.

kyle modeling one of the ladders.  i'm sitting up in the hole from the previous picture.  he's going to kill me when he sees i put this on here.  true story: that shirt has been around longer than me.  seriously, he owned it when we started dating.  in 2002.  LOVE YOU, BABE!  :)

just so he's not so mad at me, here's me showing off my sweet modeling skills in front of one of the biggest ladders on the trail.  you go up this one (it's the first and second longest of four ladders.) and then the longest one.  wind along the rock face on a trail that is I SWEAR TO GOD the width of your foot and then up two more ladders to the kiva in the second picture.

then we drove to Albuquerque.  actually, we stopped and got gas and ate some snacks along there somewhere.

and if you remember from my incorrect previous post, we THEN went to the sandia peak tramway.

end of day 3.

--------------------------------------

on day four, we spent the morning at the ABQ zoo because we're super nerdy like that.  i'm just going to warn you now, this is not the nerdiest thing we did on our honeymoon.  that post is later.

the ABQ has a GREAT zoo.  i love animals, penguins being my favorite.  and while they didn't have any penguins, they did have some great ones.

warning, adorable pictures of baby chimps ahead.

new mexican squirrels do not look anything like kansan squirrels.

i'd never seen a porcupine up close before.  this guy's name was homer.  he wasn't very friendly.

this guy spent the entire time picking his boogers and eating them for us.  lovely.  i'm glad i caught him mid-nibble.  gross.

there were a lot of babies at the zoo for fall.  maybe it's just zoos in kansas, but usually the babies are born in the spring here.  anyway, cute baby chimp.

same cute baby chimp swinging!

i think this zebra was hot.  don't worry, friend, he's not dead.  he got up and walked away shortly after i took this picture.

after lunch we headed over to the abq square and had some more mexican food for lunch.  true story: mexican food is very different in new mexico than arizona.  i personally thought that arizona had better mexican food.

and i was on a mission to find the best mexican slash eat as much mexican food as possible on this trip.

some pictures of the square:

still with me?  good.  day 5, more of the ABQ!  it was a super fun, quirky city.  i mean, come on, their baseball team is the isotopes.  how awesome is that!?!

in case you wondered...

a full sized tub does not fit in a cavalier.

ya know, just in case you need to buy a tub.  and you happen to be driving a cavalier.

lowe's had some great clearance tonight, kyle and i snagged a tub for only $50 (normally $118) for the rental house!  sweet!

except we were driving his car.  so i had to run back home and get the escape.

still...$50!  for a tub!

die Küche

i'll be honest.  i love to cook.  but, i just really don't have that much time.  at least, i always thought that.  i think what i was really lacking were three things:

1.  decent cooking "hardware" (utensils?  i think hardware is a better term.)  i don't mean just the spoons and spatulas and stuff.  i had just never cared enough to invest any money into my kitchen appliances and pots and pans, etc.  these "hardware" issues were obviously resolved when we got married.  probably 90% or more of our registry was kitchen stuff.  i actually ended up with a TON of stuff.  stuff i hadn't even bothered to get out of the boxes until recently.

2.  lack of planning.  i've tried this before, planning out meals in advance so every morning i can look at the list and be like "oh, i need to set out chicken for dinner."  but it would only last a week or two and then it would just go on the back burner.  but this week, for some reason, it's really clicked.  let's hope it stays that way.

3.   i got bored with my old recipes.  but, kyle got me the america's test kitchen cookbook last year for christmas.  it's the bible of all cookbooks.  it's massive and just full of great tips, just like the show.  (does anyone else watch this show?  we loved it, but no longer get PBS...the signal isn't strong enough at our house.  so sad, but true.)  another thing i've recently discovered (please, don't laugh) is the pioneer woman.  i read her blog a long time ago and for some reason had completely forgotten about it.  well, over my holiday break i read through her black heels to tractor wheels series and loved her blog all over again.  if you haven't read it, please do.  don't worry, i'll wait...

okay, that's a lie, it took me about 3 days to get through it all, it's a long one.  she even made it into a book.  *hint hint for anyone looking for a gift for yours truley*

but i digress.  i had never bothered to look at her cooking blog or the tasty kitchen

i think i just died and went to food heaven.

okay, i'm back.  just trust me, it's a great resource for all things tasty.

tonight, for the very first time, i used one of my enameled dutch ovens.  it looks a little sumptin' like this:
from tarjay, of course.  i mean, you HAVE met me, right?

okay, that's actually 6 quart one, but i have that one, too.  (thanks, coworkers*!!)  i used the 4 quart one tonight.

OH. MY. GOD.

why did no one tell me how awesome these are?!?!  seriously!  i'm in love.  it's quite possibly my new favorite kitchen item.  only time will tell.

tonight's dish was a variation of this recipe and served it with gnocchi.  (i'll tell you what i chnaged if you are actually interested.)  quite tasty.  i put the whole thing in the oven as the first reviewer mentioned.  loved it.  and i think kyle actually liked it, too.  then again, he'll eat anything.

true story: he once ate an entire plate full of burnt pancakes i made him in college.  i'm sure it was to make me feel better, but he did.  i've also seen him eat a sandwich covered in grease.  from his hands.

*my awesome coworkers threw me an amazing penguin themed bridal shower and showered me with amazing gifts, both of these dutch ovens included.  i actually had to go back and add ridiculous amounts of gifts to my registry after my shower, because they bought the majority of the items on there.  this is a good problem, of course.  see why i love working there?!?  most of the time.  :)

vlogging bandwagon

i bet you all thought i was going to post my dialect vlong...didn't you?  a couple of girls i still follow from my weddingbee obsession have done it and i really want to.  but, i seem to have come down with a cold, so i guess you'll just have to wait!  maybe i'll be back to normal tomorrow...

instead, i'm going to post a picture of my kitchen wall, because i'm still in love with it.  sorry, facebook friends, i've already posted a few things about my kitchen...you'll live.

here's the new wall!  sorry, no before picture, but just imagine a huge yellow wall and those two small framed prints (you can't see them in the image, but they are route 66 painting prints) and....well...that was it.  i got the white floating shelves on the clearance spot at target about 8 months ago and finally whined enough that kyle put them up for me.  thanks, hubby!  everything else i already had, but it had been waiting for the shelves to be put up.  I LOVE IT!  for now i just have some milk glass that i don't really love on the shelves (kyle thinks we should test the "strength" before i put anything up there i don't want to break) well, that and all my good milk glass is still out in kyle's dad's shed.  under his boat.  i'm sure he loves that.

does anyone else think that that nasty putty colored lower half of the wall is just screaming to be painted white?  no?!?!  just me?  damn.

also of note in this picture: the recipe sorter from my 50s housewife themed bachelorette party (thanks, erin!), the vintage pyrex (it's an obsession of mine) was a bridal shower present and the three handmade pot holders hanging from the nail on the door into the pantry.  two crocheted from my "aunt" alice's funeral and one was hand stitched by my boss.  i have a matching apron she made me, too!  in my wedding colors!  it's so nice to have crafty coworkers, they make me neat stuff.

i also got my seeds started!  i have lemon basil, cilantro, tomatoes, cucumber and curly parsley.  i love them in these custard cups i found at a thrift store for a buck fifty for all four!  the one at the end i already had from college, no clue where it came from, probably goodwill.  :)

a better view.  as you can see, i had to sort them by container color.  it had to be symetrical.  i'm such a nerd. all of these seed kits were from the target dollar section marked down to 50 cents.  i bought them out of most of the stuff and gave half of what i bought to my mom!  the instructions say to only plant 5-10 seeds per min pot, so i reserved the rest to throw in the garden this year and we'll see which does better.  all of the sudden i'm wishing for summer.  probably has something to do with my empty produce basket hanging in the picture.
and one final thing, hopefully you'll see my photography skills improve soon...kyle is getting me a dslr camera for my birthday!  we're waiting to find *JUST* the right deal, but i'm hoping that is soon.  anyone have any recommendations?  i'm leaning towards a canon rebel right now, because a lot of my favorite craft bloggers use a rebel and they have amazing photographs.  (clearly, i know it's not just the camera that takes the photos, i will be practicing and possibly taking a class to get a little bit better.)  kyle's leaving for slovakia for work at the end of the month and it would be great to be able to play around with it while he's gone to keep my mind busy with other things!

*note - i think i'm just going to start posting house updates on this blog from now on, we just don't do enough to have an entire blog just for that.  maybe someday when we have 15 rentals and a house in the country, but for now, half a rental and a messy house in the city just isn't cutting it.  :)

**second note - so maybe tomorrow i'll get around to posting my sketchup model of the renovations we have planned?  maybe...we'll see.  not sure i'm ready to throw that one out into the universe in case for some reason it doesn't come true.  i would be sad.

random fri....monday?

*sheepishly looks around*

ummm...hey guys!  it's been a while...i know.  bad blogger.  know what though, i had a bit of a rough holiday break.  i was sick for four day, everyone.  FOUR DAYS!  and not like normal sick, like the plague sick.

ok, it wasn't really that bad, but i i had the flu (again) and it sucked.

at this point in time i would like to thank my HR representative at work for scheduling our free flu shots during my honeymoon....awesome.

anyway, a bit of a random friday monday for you all, because i know you are dying to know my innermost thoughts.  as usual.

-------------------------------------------------

i got some awesome christmas and birthday presents...what about you?!?  did you have a good christmas this year?  honestly my favorite part about christmas isn't the presents, it's the people.  i like being around both k and i's families and it's just nice to sit around and enjoy people's company.  awwww...i'm so sweet.

i don't really have a favorite christmas present this year, i asked for a lot of useful stuff, which i love and of course, will use.  duh.  the one that's been used the most is my new wireless printer.  it's great!  i can just stay sitting on the couch and click print and the thing PRINTS!  FROM! THE! COUCH!

-------------------------------------------------

good god, that makes me sound ridiculously lazy.  which i am.  lazy.  in case you wondered.

-------------------------------------------------

i got a nike + for my ipod from my brother-in-law and sister-in-law.  which i plan to use.  soon.  really, i promise.  i calibrated it last night by walking in circles around my house.  entry way to living room to kitchen, up and over the stairs and back to the entry way.  walked a whole .1 miles and was done.  yay, me!

-------------------------------------------------

this will only be funny to all the Community fans out there.  kyle says the most hilarious things without even meaning to.  at least, i think they are funny.  and when he says something that is hilarious, i always say, "that's totally going on facebook."  over break he laughed and said i should start a "HairyHusbandSays" Twitter feed...like in the Community episode where Troy tweets everything that Pierce says and under the "OldWhiteManSays" feed.

i'm seriously contemplating it.  i would tell you whatever hilarious thing that it was what he said, but i can't even remember now what it was.  i was in the shower or i probably would have written it down.

-------------------------------------------------

i just remembered it!

HH "you know that show 30 rock from the sun?"
C "3rd rock from the sun?"
HH "yeah, that one."
C "what about it?"
HH "wasn't that the guy that was in 365 days of autumn or something?"
C *silence*
HH "right?  that's the guy?"
C "you mean 500 days of summer?" *laughs hysterically*
HH "well it wasn't THAT funny."

-------------------------------------------------

i gotta be honest, it's not that funny now that i see it written out.  meh, what can you do.

-------------------------------------------------

anyone else get loads of snow!?!?  i love snow.  until i have to drive to work in it.  blech.

HAPPY MONDAY!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

i know i'm a little late...and that i've taken a bit of a blogging break, but i'm ready to be back in action with the new year!  hope everyone had a great new year's eve and that today was the best 1/1/11 you've ever had!

all i want for christmas.

to make one of these.  except i don't really like gingerbread and i have a feeling i'd feel like i was in studio all over again....still, so pretty!

to sleep more.  we've gotten into a horrible habit of staying up really late.  this needs to stop.  let's hope our week off for the holiday break can remedy this situation.

a red heeler puppy.  well, i don't really want a puppy, we've got enough pets as it is.  but they are just SO DAMN CUTE!

to watch this commercial on repeat.  i think it's hilarious.  "...is frowned upon IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT!"

this kitchen.

this house.  for real, it's for sale and i love it.  unfortunately, it would mean an hour drive for kyle every day to work, it's south of wichita.  on a former berry farm.  complete with all the original outbuildings and a bunk house.  A BUNK HOUSE, PEOPLE!  *pout*

a greece vacation.  i don't know why greece, why not?  it's gorgeous.

a baby penguin.  i mean, while i'm at it, i might as well shoot for the stars here, right?

hope you all had a great weekend!
