when my dad found out my wedding colors were light blue and red, he asked if he had to wear this tux again.  my mom told him that he did!

my poor father, he's so tortured by the women in his life.  :)

When I Am an Old Woman

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and a pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

throwback thursday: week 16

WOW!  week 16 already!?  i feel so accomplished.  :)

this weeks photo really has no description because i really don't know who this lady is.  the picture is ridiculously old and is printed on metal.  she is somehow related to my mother, but i couldn't honestly tell you how.  i love her glasses.

throwback thursday: week 15

this is my dad, bill.

he was in the k-state marching band.  hence the uniform.  he played trombone.

well, i guess he still plays the trombone, it's not like you forget how to play an instrument.

he looks very happy to be having his pictures taken.  (as he usually is.)

my mom, bustin' a move as a cheerleader.  8th grade if memory serves me correctly.  i think that's what grandma wrote on the back, anyway.

i'm going to guess i'm about 4 in this one...sooo...1987ish?  summer.  we're hiking.  i'm going to guess it's at ha ha tonka.  because my family loved that place.

i have vowed to take my husband there one day so he can see it in all it's glory.

i love this picture of kyle's grandparents, ira and dorene.  i'm not sure what ira did to deserve that apparently beating that dorene is giving him, but i bet it was something pretty ornery.

ira and dorene celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last summer, right before dorene had a stroke.  i learned a lot about these two at the party.  they were married on the same day they graduated from high school, just a few short hours before they walked across the stage.  how great is it that they found someone so young and were able to spend so much time together?

throwback thursday: week 12

the girl in the center is kyle's grandma maxine.  the two little ones are her sister, linda and her brother, charlie.  you probably won't believe me, but maxine is still about that same height!  4'10"!

i have no idea when the picture was taken, except the cars make me think 1940s or so.

like i know anything about cars.

this is leslie dudley hume, a relative of kyle's.  i believe it is his great-great-grandfather, but i'll have to double check with him.

i lurve this picture.  it seriously looks like a posed picture, but he was actually just out working.

grandpa says this isn't their car {they didn't have one}, he's pretty sure they rode a horse back home.  they did, however, pick up the mail on the way back to grandma's parent's house.
